It’s easy for technical professionals to focus on the data. After all, the numbers, findings, and analysis are what our work is all about. However, focusing only on the data and analysis and not the board of directors can limit the impact of a presentation. To be truly effective at the executive level, technical professionals must do both—stand by the results and connect in a way the audience understands.
Stay Loyal to the Data
Stay loyal to the data. That’s the foundation of any technical report. But next, think about how to make that data mean something to the people in the room. Boards and executives don’t always live in the details—they care about what the data means for decisions, strategy, and risks.
Instead of just showing a table or a chart, explain what it shows, why it matters, and how it connects to the bigger picture.
Connecting the material to executives doesn’t mean dumbing down the work. It means making smart choices about what to highlight and how to say it.
Tell the Story
Ask yourself, “What is the data telling me?” Even better, ask yourself, “What is the data telling someone at the executive level?” Think of guiding the audience through the story behind the numbers.
Remember to watch your decision makers. Make eye contact. Listen with empathy. Get to your points briefly and concisely. Adjust your pace if people seem lost or distracted.
Presenting to the Board of Directors
Presenting isn’t just about what you say. It’s also about making sure the board connects with the material.
Technical professionals can be both loyal to the work and connected to the executive level. The goal isn’t to choose between them—it’s to bridge them. That’s where real influence happens.
