Listening Is The One Skill Too Easy To Neglect

According to legendary sailor Peter Isler, listening is the one skill that many of us find it all too easy to neglect. We agree.

Empathetic listening is a key component of the Empathy bone in the FINESSE fishbone (cause and effect) diagram.

Six tips for empathetic listening from Daniel Hudson are:

  1. Clear your mind

  2. Think about how you feel

  3. Think about what you may be getting ready to display (either personally or in writing)

  4. Consider how you should feel

  5. Keep tabs on those feelings as you listen

  6. Remain calm and focus on the decision maker

Effective communication and being a credible trusted advisor depends on being a better listener. Are you communicating with FINESSE?
